The house itself is full of the charm of old Mexico. The old stone craftsmanship coupled with the awesome modern new pool furniture and decor made our private gated compound a dreamy retreat. The kitchen and dining area can easily host 10 people and we found it surprisingly well stocked with what we needed.
Our time in the house was split between the large stone porch that overlooks the Gulf and the enclosed pool area in the back of the house. When it was too windy on the Gulf side, we would venture to the back. The completely private pool area is fantastically landscaped and lighted and has nothing on a luxury resort. The large charcoal grill served us well as we created dishes using local spices. We loved the resident iguana that shyly regarded us a few days by the pool and the skittish little geckos that came out at night to feast on insects on the outdoor walls.
The bedrooms were not really decorated yet, but we did little but sleep and change clothes in them. The king-sized beds and pillows were comfy and built-in shelves gave us plenty of room for our clothes (and included space for hanging garments.) The "master" bedroom and bath combo was big and private, and the bedroom facing the water provided the sound of the surf and a powerful breeze.
Chuburna is not a resort area. If you're looking for nightlife, cabs, upscale restaurants and shopping, you'll have to travel to nearby Progreso. This is real Mexico minus the violence and crime that's occuring in most of the rest of the country. There are resident English speaking folks, but most locals don't know much English, so knowing Spanish is extremely helpful.
